When should I consider Teletherapy?
Managing a busy schedule: Many people contacting a therapist for the first time are seeking help managing specific challenges – health and wellness, mental health concerns, stress management, financial, career, time management, or relationship issues. Our frenetic society places demands on us in all of these areas. It’s not surprising that we can be overwhelmed by the demands and pressure of modern life. And in many cases, these same pressures are a barrier to getting help. It can be difficult to find the time away from work, find babysitting for the kids, cope with traffic, traveling for work, and managing any health concerns to make it to an appointment. Teletherapy and Telehealth sessions can help clients managing a busy schedule and balancing multiple demands to more effectively access services by making them convenient and accessible.
Coping with Illness: Teletherapy can also be beneficial when you are not feeling well enough, for whatever reason, to be out of the house but still feel that attending sessions would be helpful. This can be helpful for clients who are experiencing a temporary health concern (such as a cold, broken leg, or fatigue) to continue attending regular sessions while they are on the mend. For people with chronic illnesses or disabilities, some symptoms (such as chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, depression, and anxiety) become a barrier to seeking out services. Teletherapy makes counseling/therapy services more accessible for those clients who would otherwise struggle or be unable to attend traditional in-office sessions.
For some clients with vulnerable immune systems or with immunocompromised family members visiting any office can feel fraught with risk. Teletherapy makes it possible to access services without the health risks of being in a public space. This can be especially true during times of higher risk such as cold and flu season.
Note: Research has shown Teletherapy to be as effective as in-office therapy for the treatment of mental health disorders.
Benefits of Working with a Counselor/Therapist
Clients come to us for a variety of reasons. Some are experiencing a general dissatisfaction with their lives, relationships, health, performance, or careers. Others have specific symptoms they would like some help with –such as trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, poor self-esteem, anger, and self-regulation issues. We work with you in assessing your situation, exploring and defining how you would like things to change, identifying strengths and resources, increasing self-awareness, and supporting and encouraging you as you move forward. Here are some of the specific benefits our clients have experienced:
Overcoming and managing anxiety, depression, and fear
Processing and moving beyond trauma
Managing stress
Developing coping skills
Improving work-life balance
Building confidence
Enhancing wellness, health, and fitness
Improving organizational skills and time management
Learning relaxation techniques
Enhancing relationship and communication skills
Many clients gain beneficial insights in just the first few sessions. The process of interacting with your clinician to describe your situation, challenges, and goals enables you to identify what you really want and the things that are currently preventing you from realizing these goals. Subsequent sessions will identify strengths and resources you already have, build on your knowledge and strengths to create a practical strategy and action plan to achieve your best hopes. We will explore, encourage, and celebrate with you, as you gain the confidence and skills to meet your personal goals. It’s a lot easier to be forthcoming about personal situations (and discuss a wider variety of solutions) if you have someone to talk with who is not directly involved.
